Setting up your Cloud Lounge account

(Video tutorial at the bottom of this page)

Time estimate: 30 mins.

As I explained in video 2 in the orientation module I want to find a way for all of us to connect as a group, without the need to rely on mainstream social media platforms, because they may not be available to all our students, and I want to minimize the data various companies collect about you.

Today you will set up your account in the Cloud Lounge, our own private corner of the internet.

All you need to do is to go to, and register. You can use an alias for your user name (which cannot be changed), display name (you can change this), and you can use any email address you have access to. After signing up you will automatically receive an email notification on that email address with a link to verify (Check your spam folder if it doesn’t appear in your inbox!). Click on the link, sign in, and you’re good to go! Note: if the website appears to “hang”, reload the page and it should work.

Then, in the tab “Groups” in the blue bar at the top of the page, or in the “hamburger” menu in the top left corner, go to group HST271, and join the group (top right button). Then post your self-introduction in the Discussion topic Introductions, just add it as a comment to my original post in which I provided an example. Check back later to read the introductions of your fellow students, and like at least 2 of them. (Or like all of them!)

You can add a picture (jpg/jpeg works fine, HEIC doesn’t. I don’t know about other formats. Let me know!), here’s how:

  • click on “Embed content”
  • upload a jpg/jpeg file from your computer
  • add title, description and tags as you see fit
  • click “Upload”
  • pick the image from the list, and it should appear in your post
  • click on “Comment” to submit your comment

Feel free to try out other things, such as creating a page, what the Wire is (similar to twitter), and how to share cool internet finds with Bookmarks. Make yourself at home, and jump in with comments, questions, discussion topics etc. You may join other groups from the other courses, if you want to participate, and you can lurk without joining. The Daily Course Announcements are also linked from the top left tab, so you’re always only one click away from your daily dose of East Asian course work. Enjoy the Cloud Lounge!

Declaration (aka how to get your points)

When you are done, read this Declaration carefully, and head on over to Canvas to fill out the Declaration Quiz (<–click on the link):

– I created an account on the Cloud Lounge website.
– I posted a self-introduction in the Cloud Lounge group HST271 of at least 150 words.
– I read and gave a thumbs up to the introductions of at least two fellow students.

You can then head over to the next task: setting up
