Do US scholars self-censor when writing about PRC/CPC?

This article has drawn a lot of attention from US China Studies specialists. The author states that Western scholars are self-censoring their research and outreach activities. In his view, they fear that a critical attitude to the PRC (People’s Republic of China) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) will lead to being denied visas in future. “Why are America’s elite universities censoring themselves on China?” (The New Republic)

Many scholars have spoken out against the general idea in the article, and there seems to be a healthy amount of critical scholarship on current events and recent history of the PRC and CPC. Here is a Twitter thread rebutting some of the assertions in the article. And here is another one with food for thought.
